Flat Sheet Manufacturer in India: Size, Hem and Wash Guide

A flat sheet manufacturer needs more than a market size name to quote a repeatable product. This guide helps UK and European retail, hospitality and private-label buyers define usable dimensions, fabric width, grain, hems, laundering evidence and packing before comparing Indian suppliers.

Why buyers source flat sheets from India

India has established cotton home-textile capability. The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council describes production spanning wide-width weaving, processing, cutting, sewing and sheet sets. That supports India as a credible sourcing route, but it does not establish the capability, ownership or quality system of any individual factory. For a flat-sheet programme, relevant capability may include:

  • wide-width greige sourcing or weaving that can meet the intended finished width;
  • bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing controlled to a repeatable approved cloth;
  • straight cutting, grain control, hemming, labels, folding and retail or laundry packing;
  • lot traceability from processed fabric through finished SKU and carton; and
  • experience with the buyer's domestic, retail, hotel or institutional wash route.

Define the flat sheet and its use

For this guide, a flat sheet is an unshaped textile panel with finished edges, supplied as a top sheet, a bottom sheet, a set component or a hospitality-laundry item. It does not include a fitted sheet with pocket and elastic geometry, a mattress protector, a filled coverlet or a duvet cover.

Record the use before setting dimensions:

  • Retail top sheet: needs the intended mattress, side drop, foot tuck and optional top turn-back defined.
  • Retail bottom sheet: depends on mattress coverage and the buyer's expected method of tucking rather than fitted-sheet elasticity.
  • Hospitality sheet: needs the actual bed-making and laundering system, replenishment method and identification marks—not the undefined phrase “hotel grade”.
  • Decorative or layered bed: may prioritise visible turn-back, border, embroidery, print direction or set coordination.
  • Reversible or directional design: needs face, head, foot and fold orientation fixed in the approval record.

What buyers should specify before requesting quotes

A supplier-ready RFQ should state the variables that change cost, appearance or performance.

  • Use and destination: retail, hospitality or institutional route; sales market; top or bottom use; intended mattress or bed reference.
  • Fibre composition: exact percentages and the material claim to be used. “Cotton” does not define yarn, weave, finish or certification.
  • Fabric construction: weave, yarn specification where relevant, threads per unit length under an agreed method, fabric weight, colour route, finish and approved supplier construction reference.
  • Finished size: width and length in millimetres or centimetres, measurement points, pre-wash or post-wash condition and buyer-set tolerance.
  • Usable geometry: side drop, foot tuck and top turn-back where those functions matter.
  • Fabric layout: grain direction, face and reverse, head and foot, print repeat, whether a join is prohibited or permitted, and an approved join position if permitted.
  • Make-up: header, foot and side hem widths and fold type, stitch type, sewing thread, stitch appearance, corners and label position.
  • Wash result: named washing and drying procedure, cycle count, conditioning and measurement method, dimensional-change limit, skew or bow expectation and post-wash appearance.
  • Colour and finish evidence: colour standard, lab dip or strike-off, laundering and rubbing method where applicable, and limits chosen for the actual end use.
  • Labels and packing: fibre information, care instructions, origin or importer information where required, size identifier, laundry mark, barcode, fold, set configuration, bag or band and carton assortment.
  • Commercial inputs: quantity by size, colour and pack; sampling stages; destination; delivery window; inspection access; and buyer-defined Incoterm.

Do not ask flat sheet suppliers to infer missing geometry from a photograph or a former sample. If a physical reference is supplied, state which fields it controls and which written specification prevails when the two differ.

Finished size, drop, tuck and turn-back

There is no single UK-and-EU flat-sheet size chart that can safely replace a buyer's metric specification. Retail names vary between countries, brands, channels and bed systems. A hospitality operator may also use one sheet across several beds or make the bed by a house method that changes the needed panel.

Build the size from the use:

  • record the actual or nominated mattress length, width and depth;
  • decide whether the sheet is a top sheet, bottom sheet or dual-use stock item;
  • define the visible side drop and any material that must tuck below the mattress;
  • define the foot tuck and top turn-back separately;
  • account for hem take-up and any allowed cutting variation; and
  • state whether the quoted finished dimension applies before washing, after a specified wash, or in both states.

The calculation belongs to the buyer's product brief. This guide deliberately publishes no universal allowance or shrinkage percentage. Fabric construction, finishing, laundering and the operator's bed-making method all affect the right answer.

Cloth width, joins, grain and squareness

A wide finished sheet requires a fabric route capable of producing it after processing and edge finishing. Ask the supplier to identify the usable processed width, not only the nominal loom or greige width. If the target cannot be cut from one width, decide before quotation whether a panel join is acceptable.

Where a join is allowed, define its location, seam construction, visual standard, strength question and behaviour after laundering. “Seamless” should be used only when production evidence supports a one-panel result for that SKU.

Grain and distortion also matter. A rectangle can meet four edge measurements while hanging or folding poorly because its corners are not square or its yarns bow and skew. ISO 22198:2006 describes tension-free measurement of fabric length and width and can support incoming-cloth control. ISO 13015:2013 provides a method for measuring skew and bow in woven fabrics. Neither method supplies a universal flat-sheet acceptance limit; the buyer and test laboratory must select the relevant procedure and tolerances.

Hems and finished appearance

Specify each edge rather than writing “standard hem”. A flat sheet may use a deeper header hem to signal the top edge, narrower side hems, a different foot hem or a border intended for turn-back. Record:

  • finished hem depth and fold construction on each edge;
  • stitch type, thread, expected seam appearance and backtack or end treatment;
  • corner construction and allowed bulk;
  • orientation of header detail, print, label and laundry identification; and
  • the measurement datum: outer finished edge, seam line or another stated point.

Review hems after the intended laundering route. Puckering, twisting, rope-like edges, differential shrinkage, broken stitches and folded-corner bulk can all alter presentation even when the original sample lay flat. ISO 15487:2018 provides a method for assessing appearance of apparel and other textile end products after domestic washing and drying. ISO 7768:2009 addresses retention of smooth appearance in fabrics after cleansing. These are assessment methods, not ready-made retail grades.

Fabric approval is wider than thread count

Thread density can be a useful construction field, but it is not a complete quality score. ISO 7211-2:2024 is the current method for determining the number of threads per unit length; the old 1984 edition is withdrawn. A meaningful fabric record also considers yarn, weave, mass, finish, strength, pilling, opacity, handle and the wash route relevant to the product.

A peer-reviewed bed-linen study assessed six woven fabrics across several physical and comfort-related properties and expert handling evaluations, illustrating that performance is multi-variable. Its small material set and laboratory context do not rank all commercial sheets or establish a preferred specification. It supports the narrower conclusion that one headline construction number should not stand in for finished-product approval. See Ahirwar et al..

Approve a production-representative sealed fabric swatch and connect it to the finished sample, test plan and bill of materials. If softening, resin, optical brightener, sanforising or another finish changes, the relevant approval and restricted-substance questions may need to reopen.

Reduce sourcing risk

Before you compare supplier prices, check capability, documents, sampling discipline, and QC visibility against the sourcing model you want to run.

Laundering evidence must match the use

Wash evidence is only comparable when the complete procedure is named. ISO 3759:2011 covers preparation, marking and measurement of textile specimens and garments for dimensional-change tests. ISO 6330:2021 specifies domestic washing and drying procedures, while ISO 5077:2007 covers determination of dimensional change after washing and drying. The buyer still chooses the procedure, number of cycles, measurement condition and acceptance limit.

ISO 105-C06:2010 addresses colour fastness to domestic and commercial laundering and notes that some industrial and hospital processes can be more severe. Do not describe a product as “industrial-wash tested” without identifying the chemistry, temperature, mechanical action, drying or finishing route and the result being assessed.

A 2023 peer-reviewed study examined five cotton-rich bed-linen fabrics under specified commercial and chlorine-assisted washing conditions and found changes in dimensional and mechanical behaviour. It is useful evidence that wash chemistry and construction interact, but its fabrics and conditions are not a universal hotel protocol or pass threshold. See Jasińska (2023).

For hospitality programmes, obtain the operator's real laundry profile or validate with its nominated laundry. Care symbols under ISO 3758:2023 communicate the most severe treatment that avoids irreversible damage; they do not prove suitability for every commercial laundry system.

Supplier capability and readiness

A cotton flat sheet manufacturer should demonstrate the actual proposed route rather than rely on a catalogue of unrelated bedding.

  • Identify the legal entity, production site and owner of weaving or greige sourcing, processing, finishing, cutting, sewing and packing.
  • Confirm processed usable fabric width for every SKU and disclose any proposed join before sampling.
  • Review recent products using comparable cloth width, finish, hem construction and wash route.
  • Ask how fabric lots, dye or bleach batches, cutting tickets, finished SKUs and cartons remain traceable.
  • Establish how sealed swatches, size sheets, pre-production samples and approval comments are version-controlled.
  • Confirm whether the supplier can measure large panels without tension on a suitable clean surface and how it checks squareness.
  • Agree inspection access before cutting, during make-up and after final packing.
  • Match any certificate to holder, site, product or process scope, standard version and validity through the certified supplier evidence guide.

A current certificate or audit does not approve the finished flat sheet. Product capability, order evidence and the buyer's acceptance records are separate controls.

UK and EU buyer information and product-safety planning

UK guidance requires fibre-content information for textile products and addresses products with different components. EU Regulation 1007/2011 governs textile fibre names and related fibre-composition labelling, including the visibility of consumer information before online purchase and relevant language requirements. General product-safety and chemical-restriction duties are destination-specific. Bed linen is expressly included in the examples supporting EU REACH Annex XVII entry 72 for certain substances in skin-contact consumer textiles. That supports a risk-based restricted-substance plan; it does not support the phrase “REACH certified”. Common flat-sheet sourcing risks

  • Market name used as the size: the supplied panel fits a supplier chart rather than the buyer's mattress and bed-making method.
  • Pre-wash and post-wash dimensions mixed: sample, specification and inspection report measure different conditions.
  • Greige width mistaken for usable width: processing and hems leave insufficient finished width.
  • An undeclared centre or side join: appearance, strength and folding differ from the approved one-panel assumption.
  • Thread count treated as the quality brief: yarn, weave, finish and wash performance drift while the headline number remains.
  • Sheet is rectangular but not square: bow, skew, grain or cutting creates a twisted lay and uneven fold.
  • Header and foot confused: hem depth, print direction, label or pack orientation is inconsistent.
  • Hem puckering after wash: cloth, sewing thread, stitch balance or fold reacts differently through care.
  • Undefined “hotel grade”: no actual laundry route, replacement system or acceptance criteria sit behind the claim.
  • Unapproved finish substitution: handle, whiteness, dimensional behaviour or chemical evidence changes after sampling.
  • Pack checked too late: size, fold, barcode, set count, laundry marks or carton assortment are wrong after production is complete.

Quality-control checkpoints

  • RFQ reconciliation: compare specification, quotation, artwork, label copy, pack, test plan and destination requirements before order placement.
  • Incoming or processed fabric: verify identity, usable width, shade or whiteness, construction and approved finish against the sealed reference.
  • Cut plan: check grain, panel orientation, join permission, size allowances and lot allocation before bulk cutting.
  • Pre-production sample: measure the finished article and approve all hems, corners, labels, print orientation and fold.
  • Laundered approval: assess dimensions, squareness, edge behaviour, appearance and colour after the named procedure.
  • Early production: check the first finished units before the full fabric lot is cut or packed.
  • In-line inspection: review measurements across the panel, hem depth and sewing appearance, not only a folded unit.
  • Final inspection: sample against the written plan and approved records, including post-wash checks where contracted.
  • Packed-goods audit: verify size identity, fold, set composition, barcode, assortment and carton marks.
  • Close-out: retain test reports, approvals, change records and production references needed for repeat orders.

Assign an owner, version and approval date to every evidence column. A sealed sample is useful only when the order record explains which fabric lot, finish, wash state and measurements it represents.
