The main buying decision is whether the proposed bed linen manufacturer can manage those dependencies through development, production and repeat orders. The central risk is approval by association: a result from one fabric, colourway or sample is assumed to cover variants it did not represent.
Why buyers source bed linen from India
India has an established cotton home-textile sector. The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council describes capability that includes sheet sets, wide-width weaving, processing, embroidery, quilting, cutting and sewing. That makes India a credible location in which to investigate range capability, but it does not validate any named supplier, site, machine base or order. For a coordinated bed-linen programme, useful capabilities may sit at more than one site:
- sourcing or weaving an identified greige construction in widths appropriate to the product plan;
- bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing with lot and recipe traceability;
- cutting and sewing several made-up formats without losing size or colour identity;
- controlling artwork, labels, folds, retail sets and carton assortments by SKU; and
- retaining approved references and change records for replenishment.
The Invest India Karur profile documents a home-textile cluster that includes bed linen, but the profile is historic and location is only a discovery signal. It cannot establish present capacity or product fit at a particular unit. Define the bed-linen range correctly
In this guide, a bed-linen range means unfilled, removable textile articles: duvet covers, pillowcases, fitted sheets and flat sheets. It excludes filled duvets and pillows, tog ratings, quilts, comforters, mattresses, toppers, protectors and blankets. Those products have different materials, construction, safety questions and supplier capability.
The range guide owns only decisions that coordinate several products:
- Common textile platform: which fibre composition, base construction, colour or print family and finish reference products are meant to share.
- Colour architecture: how solids, prints and coordinates are named, approved and allocated across colourways.
- Destination size architecture: the buyer's size codes and market-specific finished-size records, with no assumption that a familiar size name is self-defining.
- SKU allocation: the exact combination of product, size, colour, component count, label version and pack assigned to each sellable code.
- Range packs: which individually approved articles form a set and how they are identified, folded and packed.
- Change control: which approvals reopen when fabric, colour, finish, construction, component, label, pack or production route changes.
Product geometry stays with its dedicated owner. Use the duvet cover manufacturer guide for panels, artwork placement, closures and post-wash cover dimensions; the pillowcase manufacturer guide for format, flange, envelope and pair matching; the fitted sheet manufacturer guide for mattress fit, pockets, corners and elastic; and the flat sheet manufacturer guide for usable panel size, grain and hems.
What buyers should specify at range level
A range RFQ should establish the shared operating system without replacing each product specification.
- Scope: product families included and expressly excluded, intended use, destination markets and sales channels.
- Range hierarchy: family, product, size, colourway, set and sellable SKU codes, with one owner for the master list.
- Fibre and construction: exact composition, weave or knit, yarn fields where relevant, current thread-density method if used, mass, finish and approved supplier reference.
- Colour system: buyer colour standard, lab-dip or yarn approval route, viewing conditions, colourway names and rules for coordinating solids and prints.
- Print system: artwork master, base-cloth identity, print route, colour separations and which products or sizes need their own strike-off or placement approval.
- Size system: buyer-owned metric finished dimensions, measurement state, destination label name and product-specific drawing reference for every size.
- Performance plan: the property, specimen or finished article, method, procedure, cycles, conditioning and buyer-set acceptance limit for each relevant check.
- Labels and claims: fibre composition, care, size, brand, origin or economic-operator information where required, plus the evidence owner for every product claim.
- Pack architecture: individual versus set pack, component count, fold, barcode, insert, bag or band, carton assortment and destination-language version.
- Commercial inputs: forecast or order quantity by SKU, sampling stages, target delivery window, destination, inspection access and buyer-defined Incoterm.
No public evidence supports a universal bed-linen MOQ, lead time, thread count, dimensional-change tolerance or colourfastness grade. Shared fabric does not mean shared approval
An approved base cloth should carry an identity: fibre composition, yarn and construction fields relevant to the order, processed width, weight where specified, colour or ground, finish, supplier reference, lot or trial reference and approval date. A range can use that common record while still requiring evidence at later transformations.
ISO 7211-2:2024 is the current ISO method for determining threads per unit length in woven fabrics; its 1984 predecessor is withdrawn. The method does not turn thread count into a quality grade. A peer-reviewed study of six purpose-made bed-linen fabrics assessed hand, moisture transport, abrasion, air permeability, crease recovery, thermal resistance, pilling and drape, which supports a limited but useful conclusion: bed-linen performance is multi-property. Shared construction also does not guarantee a shared result after colouration or finishing. Each production route can change shade, handle, width, dimensional behaviour or surface appearance. Record which colourways and finishes an approval actually represents. If a supplier proposes a substitute base, process or finish, review the affected swatch, test and finished-product evidence before extending the earlier approval.
Control colour, size and SKU identity together
Colour control starts with a named standard and ends with sellable products that can be traced to approved batches. A lab dip answers a solid-colour question; a strike-off answers a print trial question; a sewn sample answers product presentation. None automatically authorises every size or pack.
Where laundering colourfastness is relevant, ISO 105-C06:2010 provides specified test methods. ISO 105-X12:2016 remains the published rubbing method but entered systematic review on 15 July 2026, so its status should be rechecked before a live test plan is issued. Both are methods, not buyer grades; the tested colourway, procedure and acceptance level must be stated.
Size names create a separate identity risk. “Single”, “double”, “king” and similar names can hide different finished dimensions by country, retailer or use. Give every product-size combination a metric record, state whether it applies before or after the agreed care treatment, and connect it to the correct pack and label. The child product guide then defines how that article is measured.
A controlled SKU master should make it impossible for the factory to infer a component. At minimum, it connects:
- buyer and supplier product codes;
- product format and drawing version;
- size code and metric finished-size record;
- colour or artwork version;
- approved fabric and finish reference;
- component quantity and set relationship;
- label, barcode and pack-artwork version; and
- carton assortment and destination.
Laundering and range performance evidence
Range testing becomes comparable only when the procedure and represented items are visible. ISO 3759:2011 covers preparation, marking and measurement for dimensional-change tests; ISO 6330:2021 supplies defined domestic washing and drying procedures; and ISO 5077:2007 covers calculation of dimensional change. None chooses the procedure, cycle count or acceptance limit for the buyer.
Older peer-reviewed work on selected cotton poplin and sheeting found that laundering, drying route, fabric structure and wrinkle-resistant finish affected dimensional and appearance results. The study used particular fabrics and period-specific equipment, so it is not a modern pass standard. It supports the narrower procurement decision to name the complete wash, dry and conditioning route rather than approve an unspecified “wash test”. See Higgins et al., Part I and Part II.
Do not reduce the range to one test on one convenient SKU. Map each method to the relevant fabric, colour, finish, trim and finished construction, then explain why any representative sample covers other variants. Hospitality or industrial laundering needs the operator's actual process or a laboratory-agreed simulation; a domestic ISO 6330 procedure does not automatically represent it.
Reduce sourcing risk
Before you compare supplier prices, check capability, documents, sampling discipline, and QC visibility against the sourcing model you want to run.
Supplier capability and readiness
Assess a bedding manufacturer against the proposed route and range complexity.
- Identify the legal entity and every site responsible for weaving or greige sourcing, wet processing, printing, finishing, cutting, sewing, testing and packing.
- Separate owned processes from disclosed subcontracting and show how lots and approval versions travel between sites.
- Review recent production using comparable base cloths, widths, colours, prints and SKU complexity rather than unrelated catalogue images.
- Confirm who reconciles the range master, product drawings, bills of material, label files and packing instructions before bulk starts.
- Ask how lab dips, strike-offs, sealed swatches, product samples, laundered samples and pack mock-ups are identified and retained.
- Establish inspection access at processed fabric, early make-up, in-line, finished and packed stages.
- Review how unused or unobserved sizes and colourways will be controlled when sampling does not cover every SKU.
- Require proposed substitutions and route changes to reach the buyer before implementation.

UK and EU information, safety and chemical planning
UK guidance requires textile fibre-content information, including relevant treatment of components with different compositions. EU Regulation 1007/2011 governs textile fibre names and composition labelling and requires consumer information in the relevant destination language or languages. Labels therefore need a market and SKU owner; one English artwork should not be assumed suitable for every EU destination. Ordinary adult bed linen does not gain CE or UKCA marking merely because it is textile. It remains subject to applicable general product-safety and chemical duties. Great Britain's current framework and the EU General Product Safety Regulation, which also applies in Northern Ireland, must be reviewed for the buyer's actual role, product and sales route. EU REACH and UK REACH are separate systems. Restricted-substance evidence should be risk-based and tied to relevant fibres, dyes, prints, finishes and components; there is no general “REACH certificate”. Review the ECHA restriction list and UK HSE's REACH overview, then obtain competent advice for the live order.
OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 classifies bed linen for direct skin contact under Product Class II, but a certificate is limited to its stated scope and is not a workmanship, dimensional-performance or general legal-compliance approval. Common bed-linen range sourcing risks
- One swatch approves the range: colours, finishes and finished constructions not represented by it pass without review.
- Product names replace drawings: factory conventions determine dimensions or make-up.
- Thread count becomes a grade: yarn, weave, finish, strength, appearance and laundering are left undefined.
- Colour evidence is detached: lab dip or strike-off cannot be traced to the production substrate and SKU.
- Size label and product record diverge: the article is correctly made to one measurement but sold under another market code.
- Set approval replaces component approval: a packed sample looks right while an individual component has no controlled construction record.
- Certificate scope is stretched: one holder document or logo is assumed to cover every colour, trim and finished SKU.
- Unsampled variants are inferred: additional sizes or colourways have no documented control route.
- Substitution is treated as purchasing: a changed cloth, finish, closure, label substrate or pack does not reopen the affected evidence.
- Repeat order copies stale data: current shade, route, certificate, artwork and pack versions are not reconciled.
Quality-control checkpoints for the range
- Range reconciliation: align the SKU master, product specifications, quotation, performance plan, label copy, pack files and destinations before order placement.
- Common-platform approval: identify the exact swatch, colour or print trial, finish and test evidence each product may reference.
- Product approval: approve each construction through its dedicated drawing and finished sample rather than at range level.
- SKU coverage review: show which size-colour-pack combinations were observed and how the remainder will be controlled.
- Early production: verify fabric lot allocation, shade grouping, cutting identity and first finished units before the full range advances.
- In-line checks: review the product-specific features plus correct SKU, label and set allocation.
- Final inspection: compare sampled finished and packed articles against written criteria and retained references.
- Range pack audit: verify component identity, quantities, folds, barcodes, destination language and carton assortment.
- Close-out and repeat: retain approvals, results, deviations and change decisions against the correct range version.

Qualify the range, then approve each product
The useful question is not whether a supplier can display coordinated bedding. It is whether every shared decision and every product-specific approval can be traced to the correct SKU, pack and production version.
